Every Last One
Ed Yong reports a genuinely astonishing thing. A Hungarian ornithologist followed 28 birds and found where an entire species goes in March. The story holds. Two of its numbers need their quotation marks back, and the piece leaves out the one fact that makes the discovery urgent.

In March 2019, on the second day of searching a stretch of Huambo Province in central Angola, Péter Palatitz stood in a field and started crying. Falcons were coming in from every direction and blackening the sky. He had spent ten years trying to get there and twenty years studying the bird. He had also, apparently, bet someone a beer.

Ed Yong's account of Falcopolis is the best thing I have read this month, and I want to be clear before anything else that the story is true and the reporting is careful. A raptor that behaves like a starling. A 6,000-mile migration with a nonstop five-day leg over the Mediterranean and the Sahara. A de-miner named Zeca Agostinho who solved in three months a permit problem that had blocked the science for a decade. Five twelve-year-olds who formed a soccer team called the Mungo Falcons and asked for a ball.

What follows is not a takedown. It is the three things I went and looked up, which is what I do instead of enjoying myself.


What was found

Red-footed falcons do not build nests. They squat in the abandoned nests of rooks, which European agriculture spent the 1980s and 1990s poisoning as a pest. The falcons lost their housing stock and collapsed. In 2006 Palatitz started hanging nest boxes across Hungary, and the birds moved in.

Between 2009 and 2015 his team put satellite transmitters on 28 of them. The tags showed the birds crossing to southern Africa, and they showed something nobody expected. Every March, before turning north, the tagged birds funneled through the same small patch of central Angola. In 2019 the team went and looked. The site is about 1.5 square miles of mango and eucalyptus standing over farm plots, and for roughly six weeks a year it may hold a substantial fraction of the world's population of this bird, gorging on winged termites and putting on 20 to 30 percent of their body weight for the trip home.

They named it Falcopolis. It is now plausibly one of the largest raptor roosts on Earth.

What actually happened

This is the claim I most wanted to be true and it survives contact with the sources cleanly. BirdLife's own species assessment records the Hungarian population falling from 2,000 to 2,500 pairs in the late 1980s to 600 to 700 pairs in surveys from 2003 to 2006, then recovering to 1,200 to 1,300 breeding pairs over the following decade, crediting active conservation measures and citing Palatitz.

A quarter of former numbers, then a doubling. Both figures in the article are the figures in the literature. Slovakia's nest box scheme stopped a decline too.

The assessment adds one sentence the article does not. The Hungarian population is now "highly conservation dependent on artificial nests." The falcons did not recover. They were rehoused, and somebody has to keep maintaining the housing.

What actually happened

Here is the whole of it, in Yong's own paragraph. "Estimating them in the sky is impossible," Palatitz says. The article then gives the species population as up to 400,000 individuals. Then Palatitz says, "I think I've seen one million birds in the air."

BirdLife currently estimates 287,500 to 400,000 mature individuals globally, derived from a European population of 115,000 to 160,000 mature individuals taken to be about 40 percent of the world total. An older and more generous figure puts total individuals, immatures included, at 300,000 to 800,000. The March gathering happens after a breeding season, so juveniles are in the air and the relevant comparison is the total, not the mature count. Even so, one million sits above the top of every published estimate of the entire species.

Where it goes wrong

Not in the reporting. Yong put the impossible-to-count line, the 400,000, and the one million in three consecutive sentences and let the reader see the tension. That is the correct handling and I want to say so plainly.

It goes wrong in the headline, which is "A Million Falcons Went Missing," and in every aggregator downstream. A man's awed estimate of a sky, offered immediately after he said the sky cannot be estimated, became a count. The team is in fact trying to do this properly, by measuring roost area and the carrying capacity of the trees. That number does not exist yet. When it arrives it will be the interesting one, and it will be smaller.

What actually happened

The article states that in summer the birds are spread from Hungary to Kazakhstan, and that for six weeks "every last one passes through this tiny, 1.5-square-mile region."

What the sample can carry

The tags went on 28 birds, from Hungary, at the western edge of the range. The species breeds from Belarus and Hungary east through Ukraine, Russia and northern Kazakhstan to northwest China and the upper Lena River. Europe is roughly 40 percent of the global population. Over half of it sits in the agricultural landscapes of Kazakhstan and Russia, thousands of miles east of any bird in this study.

What 28 Hungarian transmitters can establish is that Hungarian birds converge on Falcopolis. Extending that to the Siberian and Central Asian majority is a hypothesis, and a good one, and not a finding. BirdLife's account, citing Palatitz himself, has the bulk of the population wintering in the Kalahari with Angola listed as passage, and notes that distributions shift year to year with rainfall and insect abundance.

The honest version of this sentence is that a species nobody could count turns out to have at least one place where a great many of it can be found at once. That is still an extraordinary sentence.

What the piece never says
The missing fact

The article does not mention the bird's conservation status anywhere. In 2021 the IUCN uplisted the red-footed falcon from Near Threatened to Vulnerable, on criteria for a past and projected decline of 25 to 45 percent across three generations. It was Least Concern as recently as 2004. The trend is still down.

And the drivers are not in Angola. They are rook colony collapse and pesticide use in Kazakhstan and Russia, where part of the population is suspected to be declining at over 70 percent. The article treats pesticides as a future Angolan threat to the termite swarms. In the assessment they are a present cause of decline on the breeding grounds.

Why it matters to the story

The narrative arc of the piece is decline, then nest boxes, then doubling, then discovery, then hope. That arc is accurate for Hungary. It is not accurate for the species, which is in worse shape now than when Palatitz started and was reclassified upward in threat five years ago. Leaving the status out makes Falcopolis a wonder. Putting it in makes Falcopolis an emergency, which is the better story and the one the conservation work is actually responding to.

The thing that is both the good news and the bad news. The article notes that Falcopolis being small means a small number of communities determine the birds' fate, and frames this as tractable. It is. It also means a Vulnerable species funnels an enormous share of itself annually into 1.5 square miles of trees that could be cut for firewood by people who need firewood. Concentration is what makes the conservation cheap and what makes the risk total. Both sentences are true and the piece only writes the first one.

This has happened before, and it worked

The most useful thing I found is not in the article, and it is the reason to be optimistic rather than merely charmed.

In October 2012, conservationists who traveled to Pangti village in Wokha district, Nagaland, documented hunters killing 12,000 to 14,000 Amur falcons per day at the peak of migration. Roughly 70 groups were draping old fishing nets over the roost trees and collecting the birds in the morning. The Amur falcon is this bird's sister species, doing the same absurd thing on the other side of the continent.

By 2013 the killing at Pangti was essentially zero. What did it was not enforcement. It was village council hunting bans, school eco-clubs, satellite tagging that gave people something to follow, an honorarium paid to former hunters to guard the roost, and tourism work for the rest.

The Falcopolis playbook is the same playbook. Schools and churches, the traditional leaders, training locals as guides, gas stoves and solar cookers so the trees stay standing. Agostinho went to Mungo market and found falcons for sale; he says that is gone completely.

Two cautions from Nagaland, both of which the people there volunteered. One conservationist there was careful to say she could only vouch for the one village. And a hunter who had switched sides told a documentary crew that his family had earned about 50,000 rupees in a 45 to 50 day season, that it remains a financial struggle, and that without continued support "we might consider going back to our old ways."

That is the load-bearing sentence in both stories. The birds were not saved by anyone deciding to love them. They were saved by the birds becoming worth more alive to the specific households that had been killing them, and that arrangement has to be re-funded every single year.

So What

A man put transmitters on 28 birds and found a city. That is real and it is wonderful and it should be reported exactly that way, which Ed Yong did.

What the headline did was convert an awed man's guess about a sky he had just called uncountable into a census, and what the framing did was leave out that this is a Vulnerable species still in decline, for reasons that live 5,000 miles from Angola. The story does not need the inflation. Five twelve-year-olds started a soccer team to keep other twelve-year-olds from killing the birds, and then asked for a ball. Nothing about that improves if there are a million falcons instead of a few hundred thousand.

Confidence: high on the population figures, IUCN history and Hungarian trend data, all taken from the BirdLife species assessment; high on the Nagaland comparison, taken from contemporaneous reporting by the conservationists who documented it. The Falcopolis roost count is not yet published, and the tens-of-thousands-killed-annually figure for Angola traces to market surveys reported in an unpublished 2019 trip report, cited as such in the BirdLife assessment.
