What Adam Is Reading
A Billion Dollars of Thursday
Grand Theft Auto VI arrives November 19, 2026. A viral estimate says skipped work will cost the US economy $1 billion that day. A review of ZME Science's attempt to check the number, and of the sources underneath it.
Single-source review with counter-sources · 14 sources · October 25, 2026

Analysis limits. The Cadena SER broadcast (July 28, 2025) that first reported the $1 billion figure was not fetched directly; its content is taken from IBTimes UK and Automaton coverage, which agree on the key points. GameSquare did not publish its questionnaire, vendor or field dates. BambooHR and Deputy data are reported through journalists, not released datasets. No adversarial model pass was run.

ZME Science published "Could GTA VI Sick Leave Really Cost the US Economy Over $1 Billion?" on October 23, 2026 (Mihai Andrei, edited by Zoe Gordon). The piece traces the $1 billion figure to Spanish broadcaster Cadena SER, recomputes it, summarizes three pieces of supporting evidence, cites one peer-reviewed labor economics paper, and closes by arguing that a day spent playing a game is not a national catastrophe.

The cards below check each claim against its source, then add the evidence ZME did not include.

What the Article Claims
1
The release date and the GTA V precedent
What the sources show

Rockstar's newswire lists Thursday, November 19, 2026, and Take-Two continues to carry that date in its financial reporting. Take-Two's September 20, 2013 release reported GTA V passed $1 billion in worldwide retail sales in its first three days, with $800 million on day one. GTA V launched Tuesday, September 17, 2013, so "13 years" is accurate.

"1.5 million Americans could skip work, costing $1 billion in a single day"
What the sources show

ZME attributes the $1 billion correctly. It came from Cadena SER's July 2025 report, which interviewed Pompeu Fabra economist José García Montalvo about who might stay home (men 18 to 30, remote tech workers). IBTimes UK and the Japanese site Automaton both report that Montalvo did not produce the $1 billion figure and that the 1.5 million headcount does not appear in the interview. Later coverage, including a separate IBTimes UK piece, credits both numbers to him, and some versions add a "2% productivity drop" that is a misreading of his comment about long-run trends.

What is missing

No published source for the 1.5 million figure has been found. ZME repeats it in the opening paragraph as "some estimates" and only later calls it a specialist's estimate. A second circulating statistic, that 6% of 18 to 35 year olds in New York and Los Angeles skipped work for GTA V in 2013, also has no traceable origin. The closest real data point from 2013 is an IGN reader poll (10,995 respondents, self-selected) in which 46% said they had scheduled the day off and 19% said they would call in sick.

ZME's recalculation: "roughly $420 million, not $1 billion"
What the sources show

ZME divides $70,000 of annual output per worker by 250 working days ($280) and multiplies by 1.5 million. The arithmetic is correct for that input.

What is missing

$70,000 is close to a wage figure, not output per worker. US nominal GDP was $30.76 trillion in 2025 and the household survey counted 163.5 million employed, about $188,000 of output per worker, or $753 per working day. At 1.5 million absences that gives $1.13 billion. The $1 billion is reproducible arithmetic. The problems are the unsourced headcount and the assumption that a day of leave destroys a day of output (see the next section).

PTO requests for November 19 "9% to 17% above historical averages"
What the sources show

Money (Adam Hardy, September 14, updated October 20) reported BambooHR data showing time-off requests for November 19 running 9% to 17% above the typical third Thursday of November, measured 10 weeks before the date. The third Thursday is always the week before Thanksgiving, so the comparator day is well matched. A BambooHR spokesperson told Money the rise could also reflect a broader shift toward using leave more freely.

What is missing

The figure is a relative change on an unstated baseline. Neither article gives the share of employees who requested the day, the number of employers in the sample, or how requests compared on other Thursdays this fall. A 17% rise on a small base is a small number of people.

GameSquare survey: 10% plan to skip work, 30% are considering it
What the sources show

GameSquare's October 20 press release reports 1,000 full-time US employees who identified as gamers, described as a "scientific representative sample" with a 3% margin of error. Results as ZME reports them: 10% plan to skip work on launch day, 30% are considering time off, 36% of those considering would call in sick, 42% expect to be less productive.

What is missing

ZME flags the commercial interest and the gap between intent and behavior. It does not mention that the release names no survey vendor, field dates or question wording, so "representative" cannot be checked, or that the same release reports respondents expect to spend about $400 on related gear. GameSquare (NASDAQ: GAME) owns FaZe Esports and sells brand access to Gen Z and Millennial gamers, and its CEO describes the game as a defining cultural moment. The release refers to the title once as "Game Theft Auto VI."

Video games and the labor supply of young men
What the sources show

Aguiar, Bils, Charles and Hurst (Journal of Political Economy, February 2021) used American Time Use Survey data and leisure demand modeling to estimate that improvements in gaming and recreational computing since 2004 lowered work hours for men aged 21 to 30 by about 2%. The NBER working paper version gives a range of 1.5% to 3.0%. ZME describes the finding accurately and warns explicitly that it concerns long-run time allocation, not any single game launch.

Supporting anecdotes: Burger Motorsports and Strauss Zelnick
What the sources show

A California auto parts company announced an operational pause for launch day, which Money quotes from the company's social media notice and TechRadar treats as possibly a joke. Take-Two's CEO is reported as predicting sick calls. Both are accurately described by ZME as tongue in cheek and half joking. Neither is evidence of scale.

Three Ways to Price One Thursday

The same 1.5 million absences produce different totals depending on what one worker's day is assumed to be worth.

MethodValue per absent worker per dayTotal at 1.5 million
ZME's circulated explanation ($70,000 per year, 250 days)$280$420 million
GDP per employed person ($30.76T / 163.5M, 250 days)$753$1.13 billion
UKG Super Bowl Monday ratio ($5.2B / 26.2M absences)$198$298 million
The GDP method assigns an average worker's output to absentees who skew young, which pushes it high. 2025 BLS annual employment is an 11-month average because October 2025 was not collected during the federal shutdown. $1.13 billion is about 0.9% of one working day of US GDP; 1.5 million is about 0.9% of employed Americans.

All three methods count a day of leave as a day of lost output. Planned vacation is already budgeted by employers and would be spent on some other date. Remote workers can move hours to the evening. Shift coverage can be planned once requests are in. The gross figure measures how much work is scheduled for that day, not how much is lost from the year.

Deputy shift data: the only measured absences
What the sources show

Workforce scheduling platform Deputy compared rostered shifts not worked on launch days for Overwatch 2, Baldur's Gate 3 and Elden Ring against the average of the three previous same weekdays (reported by HRD, October 8). Overwatch 2's Thursday wide release came close to doubling absenteeism, reaching 17.42%. Absence was already elevated the day before every launch studied, and reached 18.02% before Overwatch 2's early access. Elden Ring's Friday launch barely registered against a Friday baseline that is already high. Men's launch-day absence for Baldur's Gate 3 rose 315%, from a baseline of 3.09%.

What is missing

This is behavior, not intent, which makes it stronger than any survey in the story. It covers shift workers only, the country mix is not stated in the coverage, Overwatch 2 was free to play, and Deputy sells the scheduling software it recommends for the problem. Deputy's own advice is to treat November 18 to 20 as one window, which a single-day estimate misses.

Money's Super Bowl comparison
What the sources show

Money states that UKG estimated "earlier this year" that 22.6 million people called out after the Super Bowl, at $5.2 billion of lost productivity. UKG's January 28, 2026 release estimated 26.2 million for 2026. The 22.6 million figure was UKG's 2025 estimate. Both are survey projections of planned absence; half of the 2026 total (13.1 million) was pre-approved leave.

The lost-productivity genre
What the sources show

Estimates of this kind have a long history. Outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas published annual March Madness and Super Bowl productivity losses for years ($3.8 billion for March Madness in 2006, $1.06 billion for Super Bowl office chatter in 2005). Carl Bialik at the Wall Street Journal, Slate and Salon criticized the method for assuming every minute of distraction comes out of productive time. Challenger's later releases conceded March Madness would not register on the national economy. Money also cites a Win.gg analysis putting next-day sluggishness at $5 billion, based on self-reported hours of lost productivity after late-night gaming.

ZME's Closing Argument

ZME ends by arguing that GDP does not measure wellbeing and that a vacation day spent on a game is as legitimate as one spent at a wedding. It cites the OECD's well-being framework, which does say GDP omits work-life balance. This section is opinion and is labeled as such in the author's first person. It applies cleanly to planned leave. It applies less cleanly to the 36% of considering respondents in GameSquare's survey who said they would call in sick, since an unplanned absence moves the cost to coworkers and to the employer's coverage plan rather than to the absent worker's own leave balance.

So What

Every number in the story is an intent, a relative change, or an assumption. The only measured absences come from a scheduling vendor and a different game. The billion dollars is real arithmetic on an imaginary headcount.

ZME's piece is better sourced than most coverage of this claim and attributes the figure correctly. Its own recalculation uses an output figure that is too low and so understates the estimate it is trying to check.
